Preparing for It's 60th Anniversary: A Look at NATO's Future Roles and Missions in Advance of the Franco-German Summit in 2009
The Europe Program, in partnership with the Hans Seidel Foundation, hosted a Senior European Dialogue featuring Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, member of the German Bundestag.
Just a few weeks after the conclusion of its Bucharest Summit, the Alliance is beginning to prepare for its 60th anniversary summit in 2009. Co-hosted by France and Germany, NATO's next summit will tackle a long list of strategic and tactical challenges, including capability shortfalls, the possible redrafting of NATO's Strategic Concept (last updated in 1999), relations with Russia, enlargement, missile defense, global partnerships, and the Alliance's ongoing efforts in Afghanistan. France is also expected to announce its full integration into NATO.
Dr. Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg shared his views on many of these issues (including insight into what transpired in Bucharest) and previewed Germany's key objectives as it prepares to co-host NATO allies in 2009.
