The Fukushima nuclear accident highlighted the need for enhanced nuclear safety mechanisms and protective measures worldwide. It also underscored the need for effective crisis management, jointly between energy industry CEOs and federal officials, in the event of a systems breakdown. When the unthinkable happens - be it related to nuclear, gas or electricity supplies - who is in charge of containing the compromise, of managing the re-establishment of transmission lines, of issuing evacuation orders, and of conducting timely and transparent public outreach? This discussion will explore on-going efforts within the United States to reinforce joint industry and government contingency planning in the event of a compound emergency involving an energy systems breakdown.

The CSIS-LSU Series on Disaster Management and Emergency Response is an academic partnership between CSIS and the LSU Stephenson Disaster Management Institute (SDMI).  The series is made possible through the generous support of SDMI and the Irene W. and C.B. Pennington Foundation of Baton Rouge.

The series provides a forum for government officials, experts, academics, and nongovernmental organizations dealing with disaster management and emergency response to discuss critical issues facing the United States’ ability to address disaster and emergency situations domestically and internationally.
