Presidential Countdown in Venezuela and the International Response

Wednesday, November 28, 2018 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm
CSIS Headquarters

Please join CSIS Americas for a public discussion about the uncertain future of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's legitimacy. Nearly 50 countries chose not to recognize the results of the Venezuelan presidential elections held earlier this year, as the elections were widely considered to be unfree and unfair as well as being considered non-existent by the National Assembly.  This leaves open the possibility that Nicolas Maduro will not be recognized as president of Venezuela by these countries beginning on January 10, 2019 -- the date the new presidential period begins.

During this event, our panelists will discuss what the future holds for Venezuela post-January 10th, how the international community should respond to this uncertainty, and what the implications are of those decisions moving forward. Presentations made by the panelists will be followed by a moderated discussion with CSIS Americas Associate Director and Venezuela expert Moises Rendon. CSIS Americas Program Director Michael Matera will provide introductory remarks.

This event was made possible through support from CSIS.
