Progress and Possibility: Reflecting on 75 Years of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

December 6, 2023 • 2:15 – 4:45 pm EST

Brought to you by

Join us on December 6 as CSIS commemorates the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Arising out of a desire to prevent future atrocities following the horrors of World War II, the UDHR outlines a set of shared global values that seek to protect “the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family.” As the UDHR reaches its 75th anniversary, these values have never been under greater threat. Expanding conflict, backsliding democracy, and the dawn of a new era of geopolitical competition are all straining the post-World War II legal order and putting human rights increasingly at risk. At the same time, the past 75 years have seen a remarkable evolution in efforts to expand human rights protections against new threats and for far more people. In this context, the United States continues to play a pivotal role in promoting respect for the principles that underpin the UDHR.

This event will have the option for both in-person and online participation. In-person participants are welcome to join a post-conference reception from 4:45 pm to 6:00 pm.

This event is made possible through the generous support of the Open Society Foundations.
