Prospects for Democracy in Cuba
The CSIS Project on Prosperity and Development invites you to join a virtual public event to discuss the prospects for the democratic movement in Cuba. The Covid-19 pandemic combined with economic crisis and deteriorating living conditions has resulted in widespread protests in Cuba against the regime and the lack of basic goods and services, specifically access to healthcare. The protests have led to arrests, large scale communication blackouts throughout and outside the island, and increased sanctions from the United States.
This bipartisan event opens with remarks from Congressman Albio Sires and Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis on the role Congress can play in supporting the democratic aspirations of the Cuban people. Following opening remarks, a diverse panel of Cuban civil society actors and experts in U.S. policy and democracy will expound upon the success of these protests, and what U.S. policy should be towards the Cuba going forward.
This event is made possible through general support to CSIS.
