The CSIS Energy and National Security Program hosted the Chairman of the Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB), the primary oil and gas regulator in Alberta, Canada for a roundtable discussion on how oil sands and unconventional gas development are managed responsibly through robust and actively enforced regulations. David Pumphrey, Deputy Director and Senior Fellow, CSIS Energy and National Security Program moderated.

Dan McFadyen is the Chairman of the ERCB, the independent, quasi-judicial agency and the primary oil and gas regulator responsible for Canada’s oil sands development. Mr. McFadyen’s perspective is informed by extensive policy and regulatory experience built during his time as Deputy Minister in multiple Canadian jurisdictions.
Terry Abel is the Executive Manager of the Oil Sands and Coal Branch and leads about 100 staff who specialize in all aspects of oil sands regulation. As a professional engineer with 28 years of oil and gas regulatory experience, Mr. Abel is a technical expert who has worked in every aspect of oil sands development, both mining and in situ.
