Relations between Turkey and the West

Monday, January 28, 2002 4:00 pm - 4:00 pm
CSIS Headquarters

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, chairman of the opposition Justice and Development Party in Turkey, outlined a vision for democracy and relations with the West, at CSIS on Jan. 28. Erdogan stressed that his new party accepted the democratic and secular character of Turkish society but "represents the common values of the moderate Muslim population of Turkey" and "can make valuable contributions to mutual understanding between the Muslim world and the West." The CSIS Turkey Project sponsored the event.
