Cash transfer social protection programs have become increasingly prominent as a tool to combat food and nutrition insecurity worldwide. In Ghana, under the U.S. Feed the Future initiative to reduce extreme poverty and the prevalence of stunting, USAID collaborated with UNICEF to expand the country’s  flagship national social protection program, the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) Program, to a new group of beneficiaries: pregnant women and children under 12 months old.
 
Please join the CSIS Global Food Security Project and a panel of experts to launch a new report profiling the evolution of Ghana’s LEAP Program since 2008 and its current coverage, successes, and challenges. The report provides a snapshot of Ghana’s national household registry, LEAP’s transition to biometric identification, and the current debate about  graduation goal appropriateness. How does Ghana’s experience fit within what we’re learning more broadly about cash transfer program impacts in sub-Saharan Africa? What can we say about complementarities between social protection, nutrition, and on- and off-farm livelihoods interventions?
