Responsible Reporting on Hostage Cases

October 14, 2025 • 10:00 am – 2:00 pm EDT

The CSIS Commission on Hostage Taking and Wrongful Detention, in partnership with the Press Freedom Center at the National Press Club, hosted a half-day conference and training session for journalists on October 14, 2025 at the National Press Club in Washington, DC. The event brought together a group of 20 active journalists for an exploration of reporting on hostage cases.

The first panel focused on the tools and best practices for covering hostage cases. Panelists emphasized that these are not isolated incidents but part of a broader, troubling trend in which authoritarian regimes detain Americans as leverage against the U.S government. The discussion provided various practical considerations if reporting on these cases. A second panel focused on cases where journalists are detained. It stressed the importance of coordination between media organizations and the U.S. government in the early stages of a journalist’s detention, and the need for journalists to communicate clearly and in a unified way about their colleague. Panelists also highlighted how coalition-building and careful management of information are essential for maintaining pressure on governments while avoiding harming those detained. The final session turned to the human side of hostage taking, focusing on the emotional toll on families whose loved ones have been taken. Careful and considerate approaches to these personal narratives were discussed.

Throughout the event, participants were encouraged to reflect on the responsibilities of the press in shaping public understanding and policy responses to hostage taking and to consider how their reporting can both inform the public and protect the hostage.
