After the coup d'état, what comes next?

Seven countries in Africa have experienced successful coups since 2020. Six of the countries that have experienced military takeovers in recent years - Guinea, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Chad, and Sudan - run from coast to coast, forming what experts call a "coup belt." On August 30, Gabon became the seventh country to undergo a coup, when the Armed Forces of Gabon overthrew president Ali Bongo.

Join the CSIS Africa Program for a discussion on the drivers of coups in Africa, and the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for citizens in these countries.

This event is made possible through general support to CSIS.
