Decentralization is key to Ukraine’s advancements towards a democratic system. Including subnational governments in the reconstruction conversation is vital. While a unified strategy for the path of recovery is necessary, different communities will have greater opportunities to prosper and rebuild by focusing on their specific needs and strengths. Mayors are playing a key role in emergency scenarios and are working with the Ukrainian government and international partners to provide their constituents with the humanitarian aid and resources they need during the war. By working with local officials, global players can ensure their aid is being used effectively.

This panel discusses how Ukrainian mayors are participating in the recovery and reconstruction process and how the United States government and US companies can play a greater role in assisting subnational governments in their recovery efforts.

This event took place during the 2024 "Doing Business in Ukraine" conference.

This event is made possible through general support to CSIS.
