Former Senator Sam Nunn from Georgia has embodied the principle that partisan politics must stop at the water’s edge. In his twenty-four years in the Senate, including eight years as Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Senator Nunn advanced our nation’s interests and strengthened global security by working across the political aisle to effectively address some of our nation’s toughest and most critical national security and foreign policy challenges. Senator Nunn’s major legislative accomplishments — including the landmark Department of Defense Reorganization Act and the Nunn-Lugar Cooperative Threat Reduction Program— were the product of his extraordinary ability to identify urgent dangers that many others did not initially recognize and then listen to, and work with, leaders across the political aisle to forge enduring solutions. CSIS has established the Sam Nunn National Security Leadership Prize and Lecture to honor his legacy by spotlighting and supporting courageous leaders who demonstrate vision and wisdom in addressing global challenges and who put our nation’s interest ahead of political considerations.
The Sam Nunn National Security Leadership Prize and Lecture was made possible by a generous endowment gift from the CSIS Board of Trustees and friends. Sam Nunn is Chairman Emeritus of CSIS.
