Super Election Year: Recapping the Moldovan Elections

October 23, 2024 • 9:30 – 10:30 am EDT

Please join the CSIS Project on Prosperity and Development (PPD) on Wednesday, October 23rd at 9:30am - 10:30am EST for a recap of Moldova’s Elections and E.U. Referendum. On October 20th, 2024 Moldovans will go to the polls to vote not only for their next President but also on changing the Moldovan constitution to enshrine E.U. membership as a goal for Moldova. Recent polling suggests strong voter enthusiasm, as well as high-levels of trust in current President Sandu, and a majority support for joining the E.U. But the outcome of these elections is far from certain and will be of crucial importance to the future of the country.

Joining us for the panel are these experts on Moldova: Ambassador Viorel Ursu who is the Ambassador from the Republic of Moldova to the United States of America, Deputy Assistant Administrator Mark Simakovsky of the Bureau for Europe and Eurasia (E&E) at USAID, Deputy Assistant Secretary Christopher W. Smith for Eastern Europe (EE) and Policy and Regional Affairs (PRA) in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs at the U.S. State Department, and Vice President of Programs Katherine Ellena at the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES).

Leah Kieff a Senior Associate (Non-resident) with the Project on Prosperity and Development will moderate the discussion.

This event is made possible through the generous support of USAID.
