Aquaculture already plays a significant role in meeting food demands, with fish supplying 16% of the protein consumed worldwide. Furthermore, aquaculture provides employment or livelihood for more than 250 million people. Dr. Rohana Subasinghe will discuss the increasing importance of aquaculture as a source of nutrition, food security and economic wellbeing for hundreds of millions of people. Dr. Subasinge will give a short presentation followed by a moderated interactive roundtable discussion.
The magnitude and diversity of the issues and challenges facing the aquaculture sector call for a concerted global partnerships effort by governments and industry worldwide. Dr. Subasinghe will discuss how these players can effectively and efficiently channel their technical and financial resources to support prioritized global, regional and national initiatives for aquaculture, ensuring that the industry remains a source of food and economic security for people around the world.
