U.S. Electric Demand Growth: Responding To a New Era

February 28, 2024 • 1:30 – 2:00 pm EST

Utilities across the country are reporting sharp upticks in electric demand growth. It appears the U.S. is entering an era of load growth unlike anything seen in decades. This paradigm shift requires us to rethink regulation, policy, and investment of our electric-power sector.

Please join the CSIS Energy Security and Climate Change Program for a conversation between Rob Gramlich, Founder and President of Grid Strategies, Brian Janous, former Vice President of Energy at Microsoft, and Cy McGeady, Fellow in the Energy Security and Climate Change Program at CSIS.

The panelists will discuss what the data is telling us about the state of load growth in the U.S., what this load growth looks like from the perspective of large commercial customers, and how actors in the electric-power sector – including utilities, state regulators, project developers, and load customers – will need to adapt. What is the connection between load growth and other strategic national priorities? And crucially, what is the role of federal policy in ensuring an orderly, efficient, and affordable system-wide response to the new era of load growth?

This event is made possible by support from the Clean Grid Initiative.
