Venezuela's Deteriorating Electoral Conditions: A Conversation with María Corina Machado

February 14, 2024 • 3:00 – 4:00 pm EST

Please join the Americas Program for a conversation with Venezuelan opposition candidate Maria Corina Machado.

While negotiations between the democratic opposition and the Maduro regime over electoral reforms and freeing political prisoners concluded in the Barbados Accords, progress towards ensuring the regime’s commitments has stalled. There are currently no conditions for holding free and fair presidential elections, which the regime agreed to hold in the latter half of this year. In this context, the opposition in Venezuela faces significant and mounting challenges.

This event will feature opposition leader María Corina Machado, who won over 90% of the votes in the opposition’s primary election but who remains barred by the Maduro regime from participating in the presidential election. Machado will discuss the presidential campaign, necessary electoral reforms, and the state of play in Venezuela. The discussion will also explore options for the United States and the international community to pressure Maduro into holding a free and fair election and provide support to the opposition and allies of democratic change.

This event is made possible through general support to CSIS.
