Washington to Washington: A Shared Vision for Global Health

July 29, 2010: The Seattle Forum
Thursday, July 29, 2010 8:30 pm - 10:30 pm
PATH Headquarters2201 Westlake Avenue, Suite 200Seattle, WA 98121 USA

U.S. global health efforts are at an important crossroads. The Obama Administration and U.S. Congress are in the midst of making critical decisions to advance the President's $63 billion Global Health Initiative (GHI), the FY11 budget, and broader foreign aid reform. Meanwhile, Washington State stands at the frontline of U.S. global health activities, with exceptional engagement by industry, foundations, universities, the private sector, and implementers. At this moment there is high value in connecting Washington, DC policymakers with Washington State leaders, provide an update on GHI, and convey Washington State perspectives on how the U.S. should advance its global health agenda.

Please join us for a public conversation that brings together leaders from Washington State, Washington DC, and the recent high-level CSIS Commission on Smart Global Health Policy. At the center of discussion will be how to build a long-term strategic U.S. approach to global health. Representatives from the Obama Administration will detail how the Global Health will detail how the Global Health Initiative is unfolding and where global health fits within U.S. foreign policy priorities. Governor Gregoire and other Washington State leaders will detail the rising stakes for the region - in terms of new discoveries, jobs, skills, educational opportunities, and collaborations with overseas partners – and the vital importance of continued U.S. global health leadership.

Confirmed participants include:

  • Governor Christine Gregoire
  • Anne-Marie Slaughter, Director of Policy Planning, U.S. Department of State
  • Dana Hyde, Senior Adviser to Deputy Secretary of State Jacob Lew
  • Dr. Tadataka (Tachi) Yamada, President, Global Health Program, Gates Foundation
  • Dr. Rajeev Venkayya, Director, Global Health Delivery, Gates Foundation
  • Dr. Chris Elias, President and CEO, PATH
  • Admiral William J. Fallon, US Navy (Retired)
  • Dr. Helene Gayle, President and CEO, CARE
  • Dr. John Hamre, President and CEO, Center for Strategic and International Studies
