CSIS Appoints Microsoft Vice Chair and President Brad Smith to Board of Trustees

WASHINGTON, DC – MAY 10, 2023 – The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) today announced the appointment of Brad Smith, vice chair and president of Microsoft, to the CSIS Board of Trustees.

“It is with great pleasure that we welcome Brad as a colleague on this distinguished body,” said the chairman of CSIS’s Board of Trustees, Tom Pritzker. “For over 60 years, CSIS has generated world-class, bipartisan research and insights on the most urgent issues facing U.S. policymakers. Brad’s contributions to CSIS as a member of the board will undoubtedly bolster the Center’s mission of advancing practical ideas to address the world’s greatest challenges.”

As vice chair and president of Microsoft, Smith is responsible for the company’s geopolitical relationships and issues involving the role of technology in society. He leads a team of nearly 2,000 business, legal, and corporate affairs professionals located in 54 countries and operating in more than 120 nations. He spearheads the company’s efforts around key issues that intersect with CSIS’s research, including artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, and privacy. He joined Microsoft in 1993 and was named its general counsel in 2002.

Since 2022, Smith has served as co-chair of the CSIS AI Council, a body of 16 distinguished global leaders that aims to provide an actionable way forward for international cooperation on AI governance and to ensure a future of responsible AI consistent with democratic values. Smith has served in this role alongside co-chair Julie Sweet, chair and CEO of Accenture and CSIS Board of Trustees member.
