CSIS Launches “Beyond Parallel” Website on Korean Unification
July 7, 2016
WASHINGTON, July 7, 2016: The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is pleased to announce the launch of “Beyond Parallel,” a website that aims to bring transparency and understanding to Korean Unification through objective analysis, data visualization, and satellite imagery.
The increased tempo of North Korean provocations and the unpredictability of the leadership puts into stark relief how little we really know about contingencies for instability and unification on the Korean peninsula. Beyond Parallel seeks to deliver greater clarity and understanding to policymakers, strategists, and opinion leaders by creating new datasets, presenting new satellite imagery, and providing analysis from around the globe on the challenges and opportunities associated with Korean unification. Beyond Parallel is made possible by the CSIS Korea Chair in addition to generous support from the Brzezinski Institute on Geostrategy and the Korea Foundation.
Victor Cha, Senior Adviser and Korea Chair commented: “Beyond Parallel will provide users with an interactive web experience that will change the way we think about unification. By bringing new data and transparency to the topic, we hope Beyond Parallel will be of use to policymakers, scholars, and opinion leaders.”
Michael Green, Senior Vice President for Asia and Japan Chair commented: “The unification of the Korean peninsula will close one of the remaining chapters of the Cold War in Asia and determine whether great powers return to historic enmity or learn to collaborate on strategic challenges. Beyond Parallel offers the only real time platform for contemplating how this historic shift might happen.”
