CSIS Launches Economics Program
WASHINGTON, June 1, 2020: The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is pleased to announce the launch of the CSIS Economics Program. Building on four decades of work in the Simon Chair in Political Economy, the Economics Program will seek to illuminate the role of economics in foreign policy and national security. Led by Senior Vice President Matthew P. Goodman, it will offer practical economic policy ideas to enhance U.S. and global prosperity and security.
“Economics has always been an important part of national security, but it has never been more important than it is today,” said John J. Hamre, president and CEO of CSIS. “Economics is a strategic priority for CSIS, and the new Economics Program will lead the Center’s exploration of the major economic policy challenges facing our world today.”
Working with other programs across the center, the Economics Program will explore all major areas of international economic policy, including finance, trade, infrastructure, technology, and climate change. The Program will have three main thematic areas of focus:
- Global economic governance: the institutions, rules, and players that shape international economic affairs;
- Economic statecraft: the strategies, tools, and processes of international economic policymaking; and
- Domestic foundations: economic trends and policies that underpin U.S. national security, global competitiveness, and the well-being of Americans.
“We’re excited to be strengthening the Center’s already strong work on international economics,” said Goodman. “Economic competition and collaboration are likely to define international relations for the next decade and beyond.”
To mark its launch, the Economics Program is introducing a live, biweekly event series, Economy Disrupted. In each episode of this online series, cohosts Matthew Goodman and Stephanie Segal will be joined by a prominent economic thinker to discuss a disruptive force in today’s global economy. Please tune in to the webcast of the first episode today at 3:00 pm ET, featuring Lawrence H. Summers, former U.S. treasury secretary.
The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a bipartisan, nonprofit policy research organization dedicated to advancing practical ideas to address the world’s greatest challenges.
