CSIS Names John Costello Deputy Director and Senior Fellow with the Wadhwani Center for AI and Advanced Technologies
WASHINGTON, DC – JUNE 6, 2023 – The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) today announced that John Costello, who formerly served as the first chief of staff and principal architect of the Office of the National Cyber Director, has joined CSIS as deputy director and senior fellow with the Wadhwani Center for AI and Advanced Technologies.
“John joins CSIS amid a technological revolution that has the potential to reshape the security landscape,” said CSIS president and CEO John J. Hamre. “His years of service across the U.S. government have given him unrivaled insights that will bolster CSIS’s critical work on advanced technologies.”
Costello brings diverse expertise and professional experience spanning cybersecurity, technology policy, trade, and intelligence to CSIS’s Wadhwani Center. He will work closely with the center’s director, Gregory C. Allen, to coordinate the center’s growing research program, events, and other engagements.
“Few people have the range of experience that John brings to his role at the Wadhwani Center,” said Allen. “This experience enables him to make unique contributions to the Wadhwani Center’s innovative research portfolio.”
Prior to his time at the White House, Costello served as deputy executive director of the Cyberspace Solarium Commission, where he led the commission’s work on cybersecurity, resilience, and supply chain security, as well as the commission’s legislative efforts. He also has served as the deputy assistant secretary of intelligence and security at the Department of Commerce. In that capacity, Costello established the Commerce Department’s intelligence analysis capability and led the department’s information and communications technology and service supply chain and cloud computing analytical and regulatory efforts. He was also previously an enlisted U.S. Navy sailor, serving his tours of duty at the National Security Agency as an intelligence analyst and operations officer, where he specialized in foreign adversary cyber, electronic, and information warfare.
Costello joins a strong and growing team of world-class tech and AI experts at CSIS who are at the forefront of assessing the security challenges and opportunities of advanced and emerging technologies.
