Todd Summers Joins the CSIS Global Health Policy Center
October 20, 2012
J. Stephen Morrison
Senior Vice President & Director, Global Health Policy Center at CSIS
On behalf of all of my colleagues at CSIS, I am writing to let you know that Todd Summers has joined the CSIS Global Health Policy Center as a Senior Fellow, effective from September, and stretching at least into the first quarter of 2014.
For over a decade, Todd has been a close personal friend and a professional colleague upon whom I have relied heavily. As you might expect, I am thrilled that Todd is here at CSIS. He is a stalwart friend of the organization: he contributed to the 2000 review of HIV/AIDS policy in the Clinton years; the establishment and work of the CSIS Task Force on HIV/AIDS 2001-2008; and the creation of the HGPC (did you mean Global Health Policy Center?) 2008 to the present. We have co-authored multiple papers, and he has eagerly joined many programs, working groups, and discussions. Please find Todd’s first blog for our website, SmartGlobalHealth.org, about global poverty here and a recent report we co-wrote, Righting the Global Fund, here.
Many if not most of you know Todd for what he is: an exceptional talent with a big heart, passionate, incisive, occasionally provocative and irreverent, and always good humored. He brings a very strategic outlook to the table, a consistent bipartisan approach, and the ability to translate ambitions and hopes into concrete incremental steps as well as an exciting vision that can stretch our work. You’ve probably encountered him at one or another point along the arc of his career: from his days a domestic AIDS activist in Boston, where he founded an agency that addressed acute housing needs; his leadership role in the Clinton White House Office on National AIDS Policy; and his work with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the ONE Campaign, and most recently as an independent expert.
Much of Todd’s time while at CSIS will be dedicated to the vital reform efforts underway at the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. He currently chairs the Board’s Committee on Strategy, Investment and Impact, and brings to that important complex responsibility his accumulated service in over 26 Fund Board meetings. He will also of course be a very active member of our CSIS team, especially on U.S. policy on HIV/AIDS, including the vital role of multilateral institutions. Stay tuned as we introduce new initiatives in the coming months that bear his fingerprints.
Please join me in welcoming Todd to CSIS!
