2009 PONI Summer Conference

Thursday, August 6, 2009 12:00 pm -
Friday, August 7, 2009 8:00 pm
Ballroom A Price Center West University of California, San Diego

The CSIS Project on Nuclear Issues (PONI) will hold its Summer Conference on August 6-7 at the University of California, San Diego. This will be the second event of the 2009 PONI conference series, which consists of three regional conferences – on the east coast, west coast and in the United Kingdom – leading up to a year-end Capstone Conference at U.S. Strategic Command in Omaha, Nebraska on December 15. Each conference brings together people of all levels of expertise from the labs, industry, academia and government to discuss a range of nuclear weapons issues. The two-day conference, held in partnership with the UCSD Institute for Global Conflict and Cooperation, will consist of panels of selected presentations and a breakout session.

The Summer Conference, like each PONI conference this year, will focus on four general areas: 1. Sustaining Infrastructure Capabilities and Competence; 2. Nuclear Posture; 3. Proliferation and Nuclear Terrorism; 4. Arms Control, Reductions, and Disarmament. The final agenda for the Summer Conference, however, will be fine-tuned to reflect the content of selected presentations. Please see the call for presentations for more information on submitting a proposal to present. The registration deadline for the conference is August 1, 2009.

The Sheraton La Jolla Hotel, within walking distance of the UCSD campus, will serve as the conference hotel and location for the evening reception and dinner at the conclusion of day one. Event-related extracurricular activities will also be made available to attendees, who will be given the option of selecting a guided tour of either (a) a nuclear submarine (U.S. citizens only and contingent upon availability), or (b) a naval surface fleet. Please indicate your preference when registering for the conference. Unfortunately, space is limited and availability cannot be guaranteed for the nuclear submarine tour.

Registration: There is no registration fee for the conference or for attending the evening dinner. Please click here to register.

Conference Hotel: Sheraton La Jolla 3299 Holiday Court, La Jolla, California 92037, (858) 453-5500 A special group rate of $147 per night has been negotiated for conference guests. An event page has been setup for conference attendees to make their reservations. If you would prefer to make your reservations over the telephone, then be sure to reference the PONI Summer Conference to receive the special group rate. Attendees are strongly encouraged to make their reservations prior to July 3, 2009 to ensure availability. Click here to reserve a room at the Sheraton La Jolla.
