Ukraine Elections Discussion

Yulia Tymoshenko vs. Viktor Yanukovych: What Differentiates Them From a Policy Point of View?
Thursday, January 21, 2010 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm
B1 Conference CenterCenter for Strategic and International Studies1800 K Street, NWWashington DC, 20006

On Thursday, January 21, the CSIS Russia and Eurasia program hosted a discussion with Taras Kuzio, Senior Fellow at the Chair of Ukrainian Studies, University of Toronto, and editor of the bi-monthly Ukraine Analyst. Dr. Kuzio discussed domestic and foreign policy differences between Yulia Tymoshenko and Viktor Yanukovych in the lead up to the second round of Ukrainian presidential elections. Major differences were noted in the candidates’ policies toward business and the Oligarchs, rule of law and the state of democracy in Ukraine, attitudes towards the legacy of the 2004 Orange Revolution, Ukrainian nation-building and the development of a national history, as well as diplomatic relations with the EU, Russia, the United States, and NATO. Also discussed was the election process itself—voter turnout, and possible instances of fraud.

Introduced and moderated by:

Edward Chow, Senior Fellow, Energy and National Security Program
