U.S.-Brazil Cooperation
Promoting Growth Through Brazil's Major Sporting Events
As Brazil gears up for the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Summer Olympics, the U.S. and Brazilian governments have expanded collaboration in supporting organization of the global sporting events. At the same time, cooperative efforts have focused on building economic opportunities for the U.S. private sector through Brazil's unique position as host of two of the world's largest sporting events, with an eye towards building subnational linkages. To discuss these collaborative efforts, the CSIS Americas Program and Project on Prosperity and Development welcomed Ambassador Thomas Shannon, U.S. Ambassador to Brazil, and Reta Jo Lewis, Special Representative for Global Intergovernmental Affairs at the U.S. Department of State.
