First Responder: A Career in Humanitarian Relief

Part of Careers in Development
Thursday, May 9, 2013 9:00 am - 10:00 am

featuring:
Dennis Walto
Senior Advisor, Innovations and Revenue, International Medical Corps

Thursday, May 9, 2013
9:00am - 10:00am

International Medical Corps is a global, nonprofit humanitarian relief organization that has delivered $1.4 billion in lifesaving medical care and training to tens of millions of people across 70 countries since 1984.  Recognized as a “first responder” – International Medical Corps was on the scene in Banda Ache, Indonesia, and Tohoku, Japan in less than 48 hours after the devastating earthquakes and Tsunamis that devastated those regions; International Medical Corps arrived in Haiti less than 24 hours after the earthquake there and was the first international humanitarian agency in Benghazi, Libya in the spring of 2011.  But what is a “first responder” exactly?

In this presentation and discussion, Mr. Walto will challenge the notion of what constitutes a ‘first response’ and will put forward a case for thinking differently about how and when humanitarian relief is delivered.
A light breakfast will be available.

Please RSVP to USLD@csis.org.
