Report Launch: The Role of GMOs for Food Security in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda

Monday, October 21, 2013 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

On October 21, 2013, CSIS Global Food Security Project launched the CSIS report "Pathways to Productivity: The Role of GMOs for Food Security in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda." This report, which was the result of an 18-month research effort, examines the status of the debate around genetically modified (GM) food crops in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda through a food security lens. The report assesses the communication and public opinion of GM products, the status of the biosafety regulatory structures, scientific and research capacity, and the potential impact on smallholder farmers' livelihoods.

The event opened a dialogue with Dr. Wilberforce Tushemereirwe, Director of National Agricultural Research Laboratories (NARL) and expert on banana research; Dr. John McMurdy, International Research and Biotechnology Adviser of USAID's Bureau for Food Security; and the report authors as they discussed the controversial issue and shared key research findings.
