What's Happening in U.S. Drug Policy at Home and Abroad?

Friday, February 6, 2015 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm
Center for Strategic and International Studies1616 Rhode Island Avenue, NWWashington, DC 20036

In America, there is considerable debate over drug policy, including domestic drug use, treatment, and supply reduction efforts. Public health approaches to treating substance use disorders, as well as alternative models to incarceration and sentencing are advancing. Courts and law enforcement agencies are investing in remediation and targeted drug interventions. Meanwhile, some states have decriminalized or legalized marijuana use within their jurisdictions.

At the international level, there is an intensifying debate over whether to change the international conventions that guide global drug policy. This debate involves challenging questions around eradication, seizures, prevention, treatment, legalization, and enforcement. These and other complex issues will be discussed in early 2016 at the UN General Assembly Special Session on the world drug problem, the first such high level review since 1998.

On Friday, February 6, please join two senior Obama administration officials, Mr. Michael Botticelli, Acting Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy and Ambassador William Brownfield, Assistant Secretary of State for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, for a timely -- and lively -- discussion of U.S. policy approaches to drug policy at home and abroad. J. Stephen Morrison, Senior VP and Director of the CSIS Global Health Policy Center, will moderate.
