Friday, September 19, 2014 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Ramtane Lamamra serves as the minister of foreign affairs of the Republic of Algeria, a position he has held since September 2013. He has served his country with distinction in a number of diplomatic posts in the United States and Africa as well as in international agencies. As commissioner he led the AU’s efforts to resolve local conflicts, including the crisis in Libya. Prior to taking up his position at the AU Mr. Lamamra served as secretary general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2005 to 2007. From 1996 to 1999 he represented Algeria as ambassador to the United States after serving three years as its permanent representative to the United Nations. From 1992 to 1993, Mr. Lamamra served as chairman of the board of governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). He graduated from Algiers’ National School of Administration in 1976.
