Preparing for China's Aging Challenge: The Demographics and Economics of Retirement Policy

Tuesday, April 20, 2004 8:30 am - 7:30 pm

The CSIS Global Aging Initiative held a conference in Beijing on China's aging challenge. The conference, which was co-hosted by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, brought together leading statesmen, policy makers, business leaders, and experts in demography, economics, and pension policy to discuss the global implications of an aging China. On the Chinese side, speakers included the noted economists Cai Fang, Fan Gang, Hu Angang, and Li Keping, the Director-General of the National Social Security Fund. On the U.S. side, they included Nicholas Eberstadt (AEI), Thomas Rawski (University of Pennsylvania), and Yvonne Sin (World Bank). Paul Hewitt, now Deputy Commissioner for Policy with the U.S. Social Security Administration, also made a return appearance. GAI’s new report, The Graying of the Middle Kingdom, was released at the conference.
