Breakfast with Dr. John Harvey, "Managing the nuclear stockpile and modernizing the supporting infrastructure"

On December 3, the CSIS Project on Nuclear Issues (PONI) is pleased to invite you to a breakfast discussion hosted by Dr. John Harvey. Dr. Harvey currently serves as Principal Deputy to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Nuclear, Chemical and Biological Defense. Dr. Harvey will be sharing reflections and insights from his extensive experience in nuclear weapons science and policy. PONI breakfast events are designed to provide an informal setting for young members to meet senior experts, learn from them, and engage them with questions. We hope that you will be able to join us for what will surely be an informative and fruitful discussion.

About Dr. John Harvey:
In July 2009, Dr. Harvey reported as the Principal Deputy to the Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Nuclear and Chemical and Biological. A member of the Senior Executive Service, he advises the ATSD on formulation of policy and plans and oversight of nuclear matters, chemical and biological defense programs, chemical weapons demilitarization, treaty management and the Defense Threat Reduction Agency. Prior to that he was Director, Policy Planning Staff at the National Nuclear Security Administration, where he was responsible for analysis of program and policy options relating to NSC-directed policy reviews, the work of the Nuclear Weapons Council, external advisory boards, and interagency working groups. Dr. Harvey previously served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Nuclear Forces and Missile Defense Policy and was the U.S. representative to the NATO High Level Group. Prior to that Dr. Harvey was Director of the Science Program at the Stanford University Center for International Security and Arms Control. From 1978 to 1990, Dr. Harvey was with the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, where he carried out intelligence assessments of the Soviet nuclear weapons program and served as Project Manager for Advanced Strategic Missile Systems and as Deputy Program Leader for START and INF verification. From 1982 to 1985, Dr. Harvey was assigned to the Strategic Arms Control Policy Office in the Department of Defense. Dr. Harvey received his BA in physics from Rutgers University and his MS and PhD degrees in experimental elementary particle physics from the University of Rochester. He is the author or co-author of numerous scientific and technical papers.
