Mexican Senate Leaders: Sen. Navarrete (PRD), Sen. Beltrones (PRI), Sen. Creel
On Thursday, May 3, the CSIS Mexico Project hosted a roundtable discussion with Sen. Manlio Fabio Beltrones, the President of the Mexican Senate and the Senate leader of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), Sen. Santiago Creel, Senate leader of the National Action Party (PAN), and Sen. Carlos Navarrete, Senate leader of the Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD). This was the first time the Senate leaders of Mexico’s three largest political parties appeared together at a public event in Washington, D.C.
The three leaders discussed the prospects for consensus building in Mexico’s 60th Congress, the legislative agenda, and, most significantly, the mutual desire to work together to achieve five important legislative priorities, including: reform of the political system; electoral reform; judicial reform; clarification of the relationship between state governments and the federal government; and provision of social guarantees.
