Trade and Investment Partnership Initiative in the Middle East and North Africa

Opportunities for Collaboration with the EU
Tuesday, November 15, 2011 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm
Center for Strategic and International Studies 1800 K Street, NW Washington DC, 20006

With

Daniel Mullaney, Assistant United States Trade Representative for Europe and the Middle East

and

Hiddo Houben, First Counselor, Trade and Agriculture, Delegation of the European Union to the United States

The political events of the Arab Spring have ushered in a remarkable period of transformation in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Great challenges lie ahead, but there are also new opportunities for supporting political and economic growth in this strategic region.

The United States and the EU both have active and expanding programs to promote trade and investment in MENA. The EU's geographic proximity to MENA and history of trade relations positions it well to lend valuable support. The United States launched the Trade and Investment Partnership Initiative in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) which aims to foster increased trade and investment with and among countries in the region, facilitate market reforms, and build on existing trade agreements.

Please join us for a discussion featuring Daniel Mullaney, Assistant USTR for Europe and the Middle East, and Hiddo Houben, First Counselor for Trade and Agriculture at the Delegation of the European Union to the United States. They will discuss the U.S. and EU approaches to facilitating trade and investment and explore possible areas for future collaboration in MENA.
