Foreign Policy under Mexico's Next Administration 2006-2012

Tuesday, January 24, 2006 9:00 am - 11:00 am
As Mexico approaches the July 2, 2006 presidential election, the foreign policy platforms of the three leading candidates will be of special interest. Accordingly, the CSIS Mexico Project has convened the foreign policy advisors to the three leading presidential candidates in an attempt to ascertain the similarities and differences of each campaign’s foreign policy platform.

During what promises to be a lively interactive session, we will delve into a wide range of topics, such as future Mexican foreign policy towards the U.S. Where does each campaign stand on deepening North American integration? How will they approach relations with Central and South America? How do Cuba and Venezuela figure into their respective foreign policy platforms? How does each candidate see Mexico’s role in the world? Will free trade and investment continue to be a central foreign policy objective? Is diversifying relations with Europe and Asia a priority, and if so, in what form? Do they anticipate a proactive foreign policy in the multilateral arena via international organizations—such as the UN and the OAS? How does national security feature in each campaign’s platform? Where does each candidate stand regarding Mexico's role in peacekeeping or international disaster relief operations?
