U.S.-Spain Bilateral Dialogue
The 2006 U.S.-Spain Bilateral Dialogue took place on April 3 at CSIS in Washington, D.C. This year’s meeting continued a successful series of such dialogues organized by the CSIS Europe Program in cooperation with the Madrid-based Real Instituto Elcano, with the support of the German Marshall Fund.
Discussion focused on four key issues facing U.S.-Spanish relations: security and reconstruction in Afghanistan; democracy promotion in North Africa; Europe’s energy policy and security; the struggle against global terrorism; and political change in Latin America. Kurt Volker, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, provided keynote remarks.
