Discussion with Leonardo Maugeri on Oil: The Next Revolution
The Energy and National Security Program, Center for Strategic and International Studies and the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, Harvard Kennedy School, hosted Leonardo Maugeri, a Senior Fellow with the Geopolitics of Energy Project at Harvard Kennedy School to discuss his new study, "Oil: The Next Revolution, The Unprecedented Upsurge of Oil Production Capacity and What it Means for the World."
The report, based on original field-by-field analysis, finds that global oil output capacity is likely to grow by nearly 20 percent by 2020, due to a combination of high oil prices and new technologies such as hydraulic fracturing, which are opening up vast new areas and allowing extraction of "unconventional" oil such as tight oil, oil shale, tar sands and ultra-heavy oil. Maugeri discussed possible implications of such an increase in oil production as well as other findings from his report.
