Michael Matera Joins CSIS as Americas Program Director

WASHINGTON, April 27, 2016 – The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is pleased to announce that Michael Matera has been named as director of the Americas Program. Matera succeeds Carl Meacham, who had directed the program since 2012.
“Michael joins us at an important time for the Western Hemisphere,” said John J. Hamre, CSIS president and CEO. “U.S. leadership is needed in the region now more than ever, and we look forward to Michael’s vision in guiding smart, bipartisan policy.”
Mr. Matera joins CSIS with 25 years of senior diplomatic experience and a Foreign Service career spanning South America, the Middle East, Asia, Russia, and South Africa. His work in the Americas includes positions as political minister-counselor at the U.S. embassy in Buenos Aires, director of the State Department’s Office of Brazil and Southern Cone Affairs, and as chargé d’affaires and deputy chief of mission at the U.S. embassy in Buenos Aires.
Most recently, Matera served as lead partner of Global Outcomes LLC, a strategic advisory firm focused on Latin America.
He holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in international politics and economics from Johns Hopkins University, as well as a master’s in business administration from the University of California at Los Angeles and a master’s in development economics from Stanford University. He is fluent in Spanish and Russian and has a familiarity with Arabic, French, and Italian.
