Andrew Shearer Named CSIS Senior Advisor on Asia Pacific Security

June 2, 2016

WASHINGTON, June 02, 2016: The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is pleased to announce that Andrew Shearer is taking up the new role of Senior Advisor on Asia Pacific Security. Mr. Shearer will also be Director of a new CSIS project on alliances and American leadership.

“Andrew joins CSIS at a time when Asia and our alliances have never been more important to U.S. interests,” said John Hamre, CSIS President and CEO. CSIS Senior Vice President for Asia Michael Green noted that “Andrew’s wealth of experience in strategy and alliance management will broaden and deepen the impact of our work.”

Mr. Shearer was previously national security adviser to Australian Prime Ministers John Howard and Tony Abbott. In that capacity he played a leading role in formulating and implementing Australian foreign, defense, and counterterrorism policies. He provided high-level advice that shaped decisions by the Australian government on engagement with the Asia Pacific region, defense capability, responses to international crises and terrorist incidents, and longer-term strategic challenges.

Mr. Shearer was also political minister-counselor at the Australian embassy in Washington, D.C. and Director of Studies at the Lowy Institute for International Policy in Sydney. He joins CSIS with more than twenty years of government experience in intelligence, national security, and diplomacy.

Mr. Shearer holds a master’s degree in international relations from the University of Cambridge and honors degrees in Arts and Law from the University of Melbourne.
