Dr. Eduardo Sojo Joins CSIS Americas Program as a Non-Resident Senior Associate

January 23, 2017

The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is pleased to announce that former Mexican cabinet secretary Dr. Eduardo Sojo Garza Aldape has joined CSIS’s Americas Program as a non-resident senior associate with the U.S.-Mexico Futures Initiative.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Eduardo Sojo to the U.S.-Mexico Futures Initiative. Dr. Sojo brings decades of expertise in the U.S.-Mexico bilateral relationship and Mexico’s internal development to the program,” noted Kimberly Breier, director of the U.S.-Mexico Futures Initiative. “Dr. Sojo is widely respected across party lines in Mexico and his sound counsel and insights will be a great asset to CSIS in this new era of U.S.-Mexico relations.”

Dr. Eduardo Sojo is based in Mexico and serves as the general director of the National Laboratory of Public Policy (LNPP) at the Center for Economic Research and Teaching (CIDE). His research focuses on combining data sciences, behavioral economics, and collective intelligence to solve public policy problems.

Prior to joining CIDE, Dr. Sojo served as president of the board and executive president of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography of Mexico (INEGI), leading the Institute in its initial stage as a constitutionally autonomous entity of the Mexican State. During his tenure, the National System of Statistics and Geography was created and important projects were successfully undertaken, including the 2010 National Population and Housing Census, the 2009 and 2014 Economic Censuses, and the Census of Schools, Students, and Teachers of Basic Education of Mexico. Also during his tenure, INEGI assumed new responsibilities, such as calculating the National Consumer Price Index.

Prior to this, he served as federal secretary of economy and coordinator of the economic cabinet, as well as chief of public policy for the Office of the President, under the governments of Presidents Felipe Calderón and Vicente Fox, where he was responsible for the design, promotion, and evaluation of economic and social policies. He also served as coordinator of economic planning in the government of Guanajuato.

During his career in public service he headed the boards of several institutions, among them, CONACYT, PROMEXICO, the National Council of Housing, the National Council of Infrastructure, and the Fiscal National Convention.

On the international level, he has previously served as president of the Committee of Statistics and Statistical Policy at the OECD, copresident of the UN Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management, and member of the Expert Group on Data Revolution formed by the UN secretary general. Previously, he was president of the Group of Ministers of the Presidency of Iberoamerica.

Dr. Sojo was previously a professor and researcher at Tec de Monterrey (ITESM) and has authored books and academic papers, among them two published with Economic Nobel Memorial Prize winner Lawrence Klein. Dr. Sojo received his bachelor’s degree in economics from ITESM, as well as a master’s and doctoral degree from the University of Pennsylvania.
