Please join us for a panel discussion to launch CSIS’s new report on illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing and its impact on national security. Published in collaboration with National Geographic's Pristine Seas, the report examines IUU fishing as an important contributor to non-traditional security threats such as trafficking, piracy, and organized crime—a fact that is often underappreciated in national security circles. To address this deficit, speakers will discuss the nature of IUU fishing, U.S. and international efforts to combat it, and the hurdles to effective enforcement.

This report was made possible by the generous support of the Philip Stephenson Foundation.

Opening remarks:
John J. Hamre, President and CEO, Center for Strategic and International Studies
Gary Knell, President and CEO, National Geographic Society
Philip Stephenson, Chairman, the Philip Stephenson Foundation

Panel discussion:
Lt. Jessica Conway, Living Marine Resources Enforcement, U.S. Coast Guard
Daniel Myers, International Policy Manager, National Geographic Pristine Seas
Xiao Recio-Blanco, Director, the Ocean Program, Environmental Law Institute

Moderated by:
Gregory Poling, Director, Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative, Center for Strategic and International Studies
CSIS Experts
John J. Hamre
CSIS President and CEO, and Langone Chair in American Leadership
Gregory B. Poling
