Of Revolutionary Anniversaries, and More - Russian Roulette Episode #43
In this revolutionary episode of Russian Roulette, Olya and Jeff observe the 100th anniversary of the event that changed the world: the great October socialist revolution of 1917. First, Jeff sits down with Melissa Stockdale, a professor of history at the University of Oklahoma, and (not least) Jeff’s former professor. They discuss why Russia never became liberal, despite occasional waves of liberalism, how Russia’s relationship with the outside world shaped its internal political trajectory, Russian identity and patriotism during and after the first World War and the Revolution, and much, much more. Then, Jeff and Olya give their takes on lessons from 1917 for 2017.
