Nazarbayev's Resignation: What Next for Kazakhstan?

Friday, March 29, 2019 9:30 am - 10:30 am
CSIS Headquarters, 1st floor
On March 19, Nursultan Nazarbayev, the first and only president of independent Kazakhstan, stepped down after 30 years in power. However, he will retain an influential position in Kazakh politics as head of the ruling Nur-Otan party and the newly created Security Council. What does Nazarbayev’s surprising decision tell us about Kazakhstan’s internal dynamics, and what does it mean for the future of Kazakh foreign policy?

Please join the CSIS Russia and Eurasia Program and RFE/RL for an on-the-record roundtable discussion on the timing of Nazarbayev's decision and its implications for Kazakhstan and the region at large.

This event is made possible through general support to CSIS.
