Audio Event: Decarbonizing the Electric Power Sector

Climate Solutions Series, Session #2
Monday, March 30, 2020 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm
Download the Transcript

To stabilize the climate and prevent the most catastrophic effects of climate change, we must reduce global greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by or soon after 2050. This will require a range of strategies and mechanisms including technological innovation, public policy, and private investment.

This second session in our Climate Solutions Series features experts Jesse Jenkins (Princeton University), Sue Tierney (Analysis Group), Chris Shelton (AES; AES Next); and Todd Moss (Energy for Growth Hub) for a discussion of the important themes and issues facing the power sector in the context of decarbonization. The discussion features individual interviews with each expert, followed by a curated discussion between Sarah Ladislaw and our guests on common themes that emerged from their individual interviews.

Topics covered include: achieving a mix of generation technologies to guarantee reliable, low-carbon power; aligning policies to drive power sector decarbonization; navigating the challenge of creating low-carbon electric power sectors in developing countries; and the role of the private sector in decarbonizing electric power.

About the Climate Solutions Series

The Climate Solutions Series brings together a wide range of audiences to examine ways to reach net-zero GHG emissions in different sectors of the economy. This series of six public events opened with a discussion of emissions pathways; the following five events will focus on power, transportation, industry, and buildings, and conclude with carbon dioxide removal technologies that cut across multiple economic sectors.

The CSIS Energy Program will release analysis examining the path to decarbonization of each sector following each session.

Climate Solutions Series is made possible by the generous support of JPMorgan Chase & Company.
