Online Event: Toward a Stronger U.S.-Taiwan Relationship Report Launch

Thursday, October 22, 2020 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Please join CSIS and the China Power Project for the launch of our report, Toward a Stronger U.S.-Taiwan Relationship.

Americans view Taiwan as a robust and vibrant democracy and see its government as a trusted partner to the United States and a responsible stakeholder on global challenges such as Covid-19. Bipartisan support for Taiwan in the U.S. Congress has never been stronger. Yet at the same time, mounting Chinese pressure on Taiwan across political, military, social, and economic domains is reaching dangerous levels. No matter who wins the U.S. presidential election in November 2020, U.S. support for Taiwan is likely to remain strong. However, the direction and nature of that support will have to be framed within the larger context of a new era of strategic competition with China that brings both increased risks and opportunities for Taiwan, the United States, and the Indo-Pacific region as a whole.

With this broader context in mind, CSIS established the task force on U.S. Policy Toward Taiwan in January 2020 to review the efficacy of U.S. policy toward Taiwan in the broader context of an increasingly complex strategic situation and enduring American interests in the Indo-Pacific region. Our primary aim was to prepare recommendations for the coming four years and beyond. The task force includes members who have held senior positions of responsibility on Taiwan policy in previous Democratic and Republic administrations as well as experts on national security, business, technology, law, society, the U.S. Congress, human rights, and Taiwan’s politics and society. The task force convened monthly during January-August 2020 to discuss the full range of U.S. policies toward Taiwan, the overall U.S.-Taiwan relationship, and Taiwan's security environment.

During this launch event, the co-chairs will discuss the task force's findings and recommendations, which are intended to provide actionable policy options for future policymakers. Toward a Stronger U.S.-Taiwan Relationship will be available online before the event.

This report was made possible by the generous support of Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States (TECRO).
