Online Event: Regulating for European Tech Sovereignty

Tuesday, November 10, 2020 11:00 am - 12:30 pm

Please download our most recent publication on the DSA and DMA here.

Please join CSIS for an online event: Regulating for European Tech Sovereignty on Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2020 at 11:00am EST.

Earlier this year, the European Commission released a series of documents outlining Europe’s regulatory future, including a White Paper on Artificial Intelligence, a Communication on European Strategy for Data, and a framing paper related to Shaping Europe’s Digital Future. These documents and many more speak to the European desire to achieve “digital autonomy” and “tech sovereignty” through an array of regulatory and tax changes aimed at nurturing indigenous tech firms, developing independent European data pools, and tamping down on large, innovative foreign firms offering attractive digital services to European consumers.

This is part of an ongoing CSIS project examining the impact of EU regulatory proposals on businesses in Europe and the United States. Our research has specifically looked at EU deliberations on competition policy, on the Digital Services Act and Digital Markets Act and the future regulation of artificial intelligence.  CSIS' publications related to this topic can be found on the Scholl Chair website. This conversation will feature keynote remarks from former U.S. Trade Representative Amb. Michael Froman and a panel of experts on the regulation of Artificial Intelligence, the Digital Services Act and Competition Policy in Europe.

Keynote Speaker:
Ambassador Michael Froman
Vice Chairman and President, Strategic Growth at Mastercard, Former United States Trade Representative (USTR)

Panelists:
Benedikt Blomeyer
Director of EU Policy at Allied for Startups

Eliana Garces
Director, Economic Policy at Facebook

Kati Suominen
Founder and CEO of Nextrade Group and Adjunct Fellow, CSIS Europe Program

Kai-Uwe Kuhn
Professor of Economics and Deputy Director of the Centre for Competition Policy at the University of East Anglia, Academic Adviser at The Brattle Group

Moderator:
Bill Reinsch
Senior Adviser and Scholl Chair in International Business at CSIS

Meredith Broadbent
CSIS Senior Adviser, Former Chairman of the U.S. International Trade Commission and Assistant USTR

This event is made possible with generous support from the Computer & Communications Industry Association (CCIA).
