Beverly Ochieng is a security analyst specializing in the Sahel and global power competition in Africa. She also has a background in literature and cohosted the pioneering Africa-focused literary podcast 2 Girls and a Pod from 2015 to 2018. She has been working in the media for nearly a decade, expanding from covering Kenya's transitional politics during the 2017 election to shaping stories that intersected with regional security and political events, including the war on al Shabaab in Somalia and the South Sudan peace deal, among others. As a result, she diversified coverage of the continent for Radio Africa's The Star website, where she worked as sub-editor between 2015 and 2017. Beverly has since provided commentary on the recent wave of military coups on the continent; the involvement of Russia's Wagner Group in Mali, Sudan and the Central African Republic; the security fallout from the insurgency in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo; unrest in Ethiopia; and how technology and censorship are challenging media environments across the continent. She is based in Nairobi and currently works with BBC Monitoring.
