Dr. Irina Kosterina is the program coordinator for the Gender and Democracy Program at the Moscow office of the Heinrich Boell Foundation. She has seventeen years of professional experience working in the fields of human rights advocacy, research, and project coordination. Her research focuses on gender order and women’s rights in the North Caucasus, masculinity, grassroots activism, and community development. Dr. Kosterina has authored more than 50 publications in academic journals and other media outlets and is a regularly called upon by the Russian and foreign media as a subject-matter expert. Prior to joining the Heinrich Boell Foundation, Dr. Kosterina worked as a lead researcher at the Sociological Centre “Region” at Ulyanovsk State University. In 2014 and 2015, she was an associate professor at the Higher School of Economics in Moscow in the Public Policy Department. Dr. Kosterina holds a Ph.D. in sociology and gender studies from Saratov Technical State University. She has been a MacArthur Foundation, Ford Foundation, and Adam Smith fellow and is currently a member of advisory board of the International Center for Development and Education “Free Happy People” in Lithuania. She also provides regular consultation for international organizations such as the Global Fund for Women, the National Democratic Institute, Oxfam Russia, Freedom House, ILGA-Europe, COC-Netherlands and the International Rescue Committee, among others.
