Kurt Leffler

Military Fellow, International Security Program

Lieutenant Colonel Kurt Leffler is a U.S. Army Foreign Area Officer (FAO). He previously served as Senior Military Advisor to the Ambassador, U.S. Mission to ASEAN (USASEAN) in Jakarta, Indonesia. He was also Director of Plans and Policy for the Joint U.S. Military Advisory Group (JUSMAGTHAI) at the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand. A graduate of the Malaysian Armed Forces Staff College (MTAT/Haigate), he has served at Headquarters, Department of the Army in Washington, D.C. and at U.S. Indo-Pacific Command (USINDOPACOM) headquarters. Kurt deployed as a member of the U.S. Joint Special Operations Task Force in Zamboanga, Philippines and of the U.S. contingent to International Forces East Timor (INTERFET). Before the Army, Kurt worked in Vietnam in management consulting and as a volunteer teacher.

He has a Master’s degree in Southeast Asia Studies from Ohio University, a Bachelor’s in International Relations from The Ohio State University, an Associate’s in Thai Language from the Defense Language Institute, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Strategic Studies from the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He has studied the Thai, Indonesian, and Vietnamese languages.
