Leah Klaas is a research assistant with the Japan Chair at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). Prior to joining CSIS, Leah participated in the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program as a coordinator for international relations for the city of Sapporo. She also worked as a freelance Japanese translator and interpreter and currently serves on the executive board of the Portland Sapporo Sister City Association, a nonprofit fostering people-to-people ties across the Pacific. She received her BA in Japanese, anthropology, and international studies from Pacific University and completed her MS in foreign service at the Georgetown School of Foreign Service, as well as an Asian studies certificate and certificate in diplomatic studies. She has full professional proficiency in Japanese and elementary proficiency in Korean.
