Mark Cutifani

Mark Cutifani served as the chief executive of Anglo American for nine years. During his tenure, he led a significant restructuring and revitalization of the company, driving transformation across all facets of its global mining operations. Prior to joining Anglo American, Cutifani served as CEO of AngloGold Ashanti. Most recently, from 2023 to 2025, he was appointed chair of Vale Base Metals, where he supported the company’s performance transformation and strategic repositioning. A mining engineer by training, Cutifani began his career in deep underground coal mining in Australia in 1976. Over more than 48 years in the industry, he has held leadership roles spanning mining, processing, product marketing, and corporate functions across 6 continents, 20 countries, and more than 30 minerals and metals. Recognized as a leading industry innovator, he has consistently delivered improvements in business performance and organizational culture. Cutifani has received numerous honors, including recognition from both the Australian and South African mining industries. In 2019, he was named Mining Industry CEO of the Year by Mines and Metals, and in 2022, he received their Lifetime Achievement Award.
